Geelong Arts Centre
After being designated a UNESCO Creative City in 2017, the regional city of Geelong needed an Arts Centre that befit its growing reputation as a design-forward artistic hub.
The A$38.5 million Geelong Arts Centre redevelopment is a striking, translucent building that dramatically reveals a once-hidden heritage church on the site. The Ryrie Street Redevelopment will embed Geelong Arts Centre as the region’s innovative, contemporary heart.
Our design is all about improving the arts experience for visitors. The new building better connects the Playhouse Theatre and studios and opens up the Centre as a cultural hub for the city and beyond. We’ve carved out new communal internal spaces for the thriving arts community, including two new levels of foyer, a bar area, state-of-the-art rehearsal studios and space for arts organisations to work.
The building form and façade presents as a lively, engaging and confident new identity for the Arts Centre. Aside from serving as the new foyer for the Playhouse and future Church Theatre, a new ground floor and balcony will provide a unique public space for the local community.
With increasing awareness that investment in the arts is critical to vibrant public life, community pride and economic growth, Geelong has set itself up for an exciting – and creative – future.
