As the first institute of its kind, Herston Quarter’s Biofabrication Institute in Brisbane, Queensland is a state-of-the-art setting for clinicians and academics to advance the possibilities of 3D biomedical technologies and digital health.
The Herston Biofabrication Institute is a key development in upholding the reputation of Brisbane’s Herston Health Precinct and the Herston Quarter as a world leading health and knowledge community. Biofabrication is an emerging health field that’s providing some of the world’s most innovative treatment and rehabilitation.
The Herston Biofabrication Institute works closely with academic partner University of Queensland for its transformative research into digital health and manufacturing of 3D biomedical technologies including printed bone, tissue and bioresorbable materials.
The bespoke building design supports this collaborative approach, integrating cutting-edge technology with organic flexible spaces where clinicians, academics, industry and consumers can learn, collaborate and conduct research. It features a full mechanical workshop, a 3D printing lab, a digital innovation hub, a tissue culture laboratory and patient consultation rooms, as well as interactive public gallery spaces.
The building had to be adaptable and functional while offering a calming and welcoming space for those undergoing treatment, reflecting the breadth of the groundbreaking work carried out, from research and education to treatment and rehabilitation.
