Richard Mullane

Design thinking gives us great solutions to diverse challenges — from creating a safe street for kids to ride to school, to reshaping cities to face rising sea levels.”

After stints in our Sydney, Shanghai, and San Francisco studios and now Melbourne — Richard brings a truly global view to everything he does. With qualifications under his belt in architecture, urban design, plus urban and environmental management, Richard is a strategic planner and placemaker with extensive experience leading multidisciplinary teams. Now a Board Director, Richard continues to drive ambitious commitments toward sustainability and regenerative design outcomes across Hassell.

Regularly contributing to our international work, Richard plays a key role in award-winning projects across transport, education and waterfronts. A strong advocate for collaborative and site-responsive design, he is passionate about unlocking the potential of cities by creating unique and sustainable design solutions through close engagement with local communities. Notably, Richard led Hassell’s team in the highly successful Resilient By Design Bay Area Challenge.

An insightful, articulate leader and a great facilitator for involving communities in the design process, Richard loves how combined, focused effort can create a better future by designing the world’s best places – places people love.
