Western Australian Museum opening 21 November 2020
The new Western Australian Museum in Perth, designed in joint venture by international design practices Hassell + OMA, will be open to public on 21 November 2020.
With its mix of heritage and contemporary architecture, the WA Museum celebrates the Australian State’s unique culture, history and landscape and contributes to the revitalisation of the creative heart of Perth.
Wandering between the restored heritage-listed buildings and the new contemporary build will feel seamless for visitors. The old and new come together at the centre of the Museum to frame a spectacular ‘outdoor room’ – the ‘City Room’ – a public space that is a meeting place, event space and program area for the whole community.
A 1,000 sqm special exhibition gallery will feature major exhibitions from around Australia and the world. Retail offerings and places to eat and drink are designed to encourage visitors to flow through the Museum – especially after hours – contributing to the precinct’s ongoing activation and growth.
Hassell + OMA worked collaboratively with Managing Contractor Multiplex to deliver the project, with the architectural team led by Hassell Principal Mark Loughnan, OMA Managing Partner – Architect David Gianotten, Hassell Principal Peter Dean and OMA Regional Director Paul Jones.
Details of the WA Museum opening festival between 21 and 29 November and preview ticket allocation will be announced by the Museum later this year. Details at museum.wa.gov.au/new-museum.
