Art in Motion: Hassell at BODW showcasing the power of experience design and art in metro journeys
When art intersects with infrastructure — say, a metro system — something fascinating happens. Art becomes integral to our travelling experience — it becomes part of the journey.
At Hassell, we’ve been exploring this dynamic for years. During Business of Design Week (BODW) in Hong Kong (Dec 2-7), we leaned into this year’s theme — Design, Artistry and Innovation — by showcasing how design and art can elevate something as routine as a train ride.
On December 12, we launched an exhibition in our studio titled Art in Motion, as part of BODW where we heard from guest speaker Andrew Mead, Principal Advisor, Architecture, MTR. An award-winning architect, Andrew specialises in integrating artworks into mass transit station design. Through his leading role in the acclaimed Art in MTR programme, he commissioned local and international artists to create site-specific artworks that enrich the daily commute.
Our exhibition spotlighted metro projects where art isn’t just a feature — it’s a force. Projects like Cross River Rail in Brisbane, Sydney Metro, Melbourne’s Metro Tunnel Project, and more. Each project demonstrates that art can turn a daily commute into a richer, more human experience.
“Our Art in Motion exhibition showcased Hassell’s collaboration with artists and community leaders in the design of 25 new metro stations — creating opportunities to delight, connect and guide the travelling public.”
