Usher Institute

The University of Edinburgh’s gem’, the Usher Institute is designed from the inside out to realise the prestigious university’s aim of creating a world-class research, workplace and post-graduate teaching hub.

A space to inspire innovation, wellbeing and community drove the design of the university’s new building, a major addition to Edinburgh’s rapidly expanding BioQuarter.

The Institute brings together over 900 students, researchers, healthcare providers, and industry partners to delve into some of the world’s most pressing health challenges through work with people, populations and data. It is a key part of the growing health innovation ecosystem in South East Scotland.

With mental and physical wellbeing central to the design, healthy workplace choices are prominent throughout the building. From open staircases encouraging active movement to double-height recreational spaces designed to bring in light and outdoor greenery, the design recognises the changing needs of professionals and supports post-pandemic agile ways of working.

Creating a striking landmark for Edinburgh and a recognisable identity for the University, the building design sensitively considers the city’s rich history through a solid, civic and characterful façade that acknowledges the site’s proximity to Edinburgh’s historic castle and city centre.
