Metro North West a multi-award winner

Metro North West has added another significant urban design award to its list of accolades, taking out the top honour in the 2020 Australian Urban Design Awards (AUDA).

Australia’s first fully automated, fully-accessible rail system, Metro North West was designed by Hassell in collaboration with Turpin Crawford Studio and McGregor Westlake Architecture. It was named the winner of the Built projects – city and regional scale category. 

It’s been a big year for Metro North West, which also won the Lloyd Rees Award for Urban Design at the 2020 NSW AIA Awards.

The AUDA, regarded as the peak award for urban design in Australia, was judged by a jury of representatives from the Planning Institute of Australia, the Australian institute of Architects, and the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects.

The jury declared Metro North West the winner for the way it ​“incorporates art, engineering, green infrastructure and architecture to create beautiful town centre stations and plazas, resulting in a piece of rail infrastructure that is context-sensitive and integrated across all lines.”

We also took out the Landscape Architecture Award for Infrastructure at the 2020 National Landscape Architecture Awards for the Aerodrome Road Intersection. The project advocates for people-oriented design in transport, and ​“celebrates the experience of walking with a generous and rhythmic planting strategy.”
