Hassell to design new Qianhai Shenzhen-Hong Kong transport project
Hassell is the winning design practice for the Qianhai Shenzhen-Hong Kong International Service City (SHISC) Transit-Oriented Development project.
The landmark project — part of a master plan by the Shenzhen Qianhai Shekou Free Trade Investment and Development Organisation — will transform the way people move between the cities of Shenzhen and Hong Kong. It will include Hassell’s design of precincts surrounding three new underground metro stations.
Our design team envisions the new stations as more than just transportation hubs for passengers; they are community centres that incorporate a range of functions. The integrated station designs focus on the passenger experience, creating a place for people while also benefiting the local economy.
“We go beyond the conventional engineering-driven approach to station precinct design by creating vibrant community-focused hubs.”
— Peter Morley, Principal and Co-leader Urban Transport sector
Design highlights include:
- An open, connected urban network featuring seamless links between the stations and their surrounding public spaces.
- Activation of station precincts to create a dynamic place via multiple programmes that meet people’s daily needs while creating playful, agile environments.
- Regenerative strategies, including flexible and modular building design, extensive landscape design and energy-saving initiatives, ensure that the development will be more resilient over time.
- A focus on efficiency by integrating the stations with surrounding developments to save valuable land, resources, energy and time, and encourage more people to use public transport rather than private cars.
“Our team is honoured to work with our client, the Shenzhen Qianhai Shekou Free Trade Investment and Development Organisation, to create a benchmark development between Shenzhen and Hong Kong that will help shape a robust, vibrant and prosperous community,” says Weilun Chen, Senior Associate.
