One in three Australian office desks are empty: report

A new report by Australian workplace sensor provider XY Sense suggests the push to get workers back into the office has stalled. Hassell’s Commercial and Workplace sector principal said working from home has become so entrenched that organisations must now earn higher levels of office attendance by ensuring their workplaces support employees to “be both individually productive and socially connected”. “[Employers must provide] experiences that are aligned to purpose and [enrich] lives by making people happier and healthier in the office,” she said. “Success lies with the carrot — not the stick.” Read the full article in the Australian Financial Review. Office transformations produce higher employee satisfaction

Workplaces that have changed their office spaces to accommodate new working arrangements show a 17 percent increase in employee satisfaction scores. A new report released by Hassell, ‘Great Adaptations – 2023 Workplace Futures Survey’, revealed that the average hybrid employee satisfaction score of 70 out of 100 improves to 83 in offices that have been renovated in the past year – a 17 percent increase. According to Hassell’s Great Adaptations – 2023 Workplace Futures Survey, those who have made an office change since the pandemic have a 17 per cent higher satisfaction score among employees than those that haven’t. Time for change: A new report raises questions about how well workplaces are currently designed as companies struggle to get employees back into them. Hassell workplace survey says change is key for office occupancy

Hassell has released its latest report, the Great Adaptations – 2023 Workplace Futures Survey, which provides a number of insights into workplace satisfaction. The general consensus amongst built environment professionals that people must be lured back to the office via good design has been proven correct by the survey, with companies that have made a change to their offices and way of working post-pandemic recording a 17 percent higher satisfaction score compared to those who haven’t. Converting vacant CBD offices into apartments could create up to 12,000 Melbourne homes.

“Ripe for adaptive re-use”: Hassell’s latest Office to Home research, conducted on behalf of the Property Council of Australia in partnership with Ethos Urban, has identified 86 vacant Melbourne CBD buildings that could be converted into 10−12,000 new homes for 20,000 people.

Mock Metro Tunnel stations set up in Footscray warehouse

The project team working on the Metro Tunnel stations is finalising architectural elements for the five new stations inside a Footscray warehouse. Victoria’s Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Jacinta Allan said the design and construction of the Metro Tunnel is creating jobs and supporting businesses. “As the stations take shape, test trains are running at line speed deep beneath Melbourne – bringing us closer to the opening of the Metro Tunnel in 2025, a year ahead of schedule,” said Minister Allan.
