Covid-deserted workspaces in Melbourne CBD could create 12,000 homes

Victoria’s Andrews government has asked for further investigation after a report found 90 buildings in Melbourne’s CBD could be repurposed to fix the housing crisis. Hassell’s study, conducted on behalf of the Property Council of Australia, found that subject to individual feasibility studies, approximately 86 office buildings are “ripe for adaptive reuse”. Hassell principal architect and case study leader Ingrid Bakker said the project also offers a possible solution to help reactivate the city, while also providing a sustainable outlook. Offices need to flex up and down, says new Hassell boss Liz Westgarth

Offices will increasingly locate collaborative workspaces on key floors to give employers the ability to cluster staff together when only a few people are in the office as well as to spread them out when more come in, architecture firm Hassell’s new managing director Liz Westgarth says. “We’re looking at designs for clients that allow them to flex across multiple floors,” Ms Westgarth said. “When they have [more] people who want to come into the workplace, they can spread out, and when there are fewer people in the office they go through a booking system that allows them to co-locate together and have that energy and the ‘bump’ factor.” Read the full article in the Australian Financial Review. Office building above Melbourne’s Town Hall Station approved

Town Hall Place has been given the Victorian state government’s green light. Our proposal for a 10-storey A-grade commercial tower will deliver a building that is contextually appropriate and beautifully proportioned. “It will be a self-assured, confident building that will establish an enduring civic counterpoint to the inherently ‘expressive’ characteristics of the surrounding buildings,” says Hassell principal Andrew Low. Town Hall Place to tap into Melbourne CBD beat

The AFR reports that planning approval has been granted to Lendlease for the 16,000sqm development above Town Hall Station, designed by Hassell architects, in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD. “The transformation of this site will showcase how smart over-station development can unlock the potential of our cities by linking key transport interchanges with exceptional retail, workplace, and lifestyle experiences,” said Tom Mackellar, Lendlease’s managing director of development.
