Hassell wins global competition to reimagine Shanghai’s gateway

Hassell has been named the winner of the prestigious international design competition for the Sanchagang Port Green Space in Pudong, Shanghai.

Partnering with the Architectural Design and Research Institute of Tsinghua University, Hassell will lead the transformation of this landmark 6.6-square-kilometer site at the confluence of the Yangtze, Huangpu, and Wusong Rivers.

The landscape planning and design, titled Dynamic Pujiang - Resilient Habitat, emphasises sustainability and climate resilience, with zero-carbon principles at its core. The plan integrates multifunctional green infrastructure, blending landscape features like springs, ports, and bridges with a modern energy tower to create a layered eco-network at this critical river-sea intersection.

The project also focuses on publicly accessible natural and recreational spaces and ecological preservation. It will feature cultural spaces, climate change exhibitions, and industrial art installations while maintaining the site’s historical and ecological integrity. By preserving the area’s unique water systems and original village fingerprint,” the design enhances local character and environmental adaptability.

Competition judges commended Hassell’s approach to balancing urban vibrancy with ecological sensitivity. The plan concentrates buildings near urban zones to minimise natural disruption while creating dynamic riverside public spaces. Its architectural coherence and respect for the site’s natural and cultural heritage earned high praise.

This ambitious project will establish Sanchagang Port as a model for sustainable urban design, blending Shanghai’s historical roots with a future-focused vision.
