Designing linear corridors to deliver greater value for community and planet

Hassell’s new landmark study, ‘Corridors: Designing linear infrastructure in a non-linear world’, takes a cross-sector look at the impact of built corridors on people and planet, as well as that of urban developments on natural corridors. Combining knowledge from the railway, roadway, waterway, and utility sectors across Australia, China, Singapore, Europe, and North America, the study explores how linear infrastructure can be designed to deliver greater value for all through a unified, holistic corridor design approach. Harbourside public domain designs released

The New South Wales government has released a design for the public outdoor areas of the Harbourside Shopping Centre redevelopment in Tumbalong/Darling Harbour. Designed by Snøhetta and Hassell, the redevelopment proposes to create a range of retail, hospitality and entertainment spaces, as well as a 42-storey residential tower. The public elements of the project include a series of through-site links, upgrades to the promenade around Cockle Bay and a new waterfront plaza and garden. The design team has collaborated with cultural design and research consultant Danièle Hromek (Djinjama) and Indigenous planting specialist Clarence Slockee (Jiwah) to embed Wangal and Gadigal ways of thinking and narratives into the design. Could vacant office buildings in Melbourne be repurposed to boost housing supply?

A study by design studio Hassell, in partnership with Ethos Urban and the Property Council of Australia, found that around 90 pre-1990 office buildings in Melbourne’s CBD could be converted into 10,000−12,000 apartments, housing up to 20,000 people, through adaptive reuse.

Sydney Airport unveils new forecourt at International Arrivals Terminal

Sydney Airport has officially opened its new T1 International arrivals forecourt — designed by Hassell — which is set to be enjoyed by millions of international travellers every year. Indigenous perspectives have been embedded throughout the design, construction and maintenance of the T1 International arrivals Forecourt. Wildflower Gardens for Good, an Indigenous led not-for-profit organisation, has planted more than 12,200 native species throughout the forecourt. “International passengers are now greeted with a vibrant new arrivals forecourt that showcases the natural beauty Sydney is known for,” said Sydney Airport CEO Geoff Culbert. WA’s first children’s hospice approved

The Western Australian Planning Commission has approved the state’s first and only purpose-built children’s hospice facility, designed by Hassell. The facility will provide round-the-clock care for children with life-limiting conditions. “This beautifully designed and situated hospice will make a tremendous difference to the West Australian families going through what is the most challenging of journeys,” said WA premier Roger Cook. “I am looking forward to seeing this important facility complete and supporting children, their parents, siblings and other loved ones and providing them comfort.” Read the full article in ArchitectureAU.

NSW puts Indigenous design at centre of new park tender

The NSW government has set new standards in tendering by mandating ongoing consultation with local Aboriginal people over a new public square in western Sydney’s Bradfield City and giving Indigenous considerations a hefty 20 per cent weighting in the final decision. Hassell’s design for Bradfield Central Park is shortlisted amongst five leading firms vying for the tender that is due to be announced in August. Read more in the AFR.
