STREET WORKS invited entrants to re-imagine spaces in the City of Sydney as dynamic, innovative and sustainable temporary public places that will bring people together in unique ways. The HASSELL concept, called Walk the Line, is a path that connects all six of the STREET WORKS spaces

The journey through the Giant Panda Forest provides visitors with an immersive experience of the Chinese Highlands and enables a variety of viewing opportunities, educational and recreational

The Darwin City Waterfront focuses on the provision of generous open parklands with mature shade trees and associated exotic planting for Darwin residents and visitors to enjoy through all of the Territory's unique dramatic seasons

This unique learning environment is an important addition to community infrastructure within a fast-growing high-density commercial and residential precinct

Sustainability was integral to the design. The narrow floorplate of the clubhouse allows fresh air and daylight to penetrate all principal rooms. The building management system is connected to the lights and the mechanical ventilation, activating the adjustable sun shading and closing off air conditioning units as required

The design solution emphasises the sense of the courtyard as the university's heart, providing a flexible space for events and clear and safe access. Areas of turf have been constructed within clearings giving students grassy areas for relaxation

A key feature of the kiosk is the 'woven' timber facade, the dappled intricacy of which aims to soften the utilitarian nature of this type of building. The zigzag-cut battens were carefully designed to enable adjacent battens to be cut from one piece of timber – maximising the benefit of this fine material and minimising waste

The overhanging stone elements of the raised podium and tree plinth are under-lit as part of a lighting strategy developed to illuminate the architectural features of the church and surrounding spaces

The urban design recognises the importance of establishing a community hub through the provision of schools, community facilities and a commercial precinct

A cable is suspended over a pond and playground, on it balances a series of sculptures which take on the shape of abstracted birds in flight. The light shapes pivot and rock in the breeze

The HASSELL and Lend Lease design brings the city to the river and will create a vibrant waterfront community, offering visitors and residents a range of entertainment, commercial and residential uses in a unique waterfront location

Wentworth Common at Sydney Olympic Parklands has been transformed into an area of play which invites curiosity, introduces the notion of a journey and inspires adventure. The play sequence is composed as an origami-like insert placed into an existing Melaleuca forest

While recalling the heritage of the site, the design retains and rehabilitates large portions of valued bushland and provides extensive high quality parkland amenity

The blocks display the different states of sandstone from a split block and roughly quarried blocks to finished and fine details. Carvings include replications of details found on the General Post Office, Government House, the Great Synagogue and St Mary's Cathedral

The design concept embodied four key principles that relate to its place: site-wide environmental strategy, interpretation of the natural wetland systems, site connectivity and community development. An underlying approach to the design has been to acknowledge the historical layers of the site so that the new works become part of the ongoing narrative of the library, thereby maintaining the integrity of the original design, and ensuring continued enjoyment by future generations

The challenge of the project was to cost effectively deliver a range of complimentary recreation experiences that would appeal to all sectors of the community as well as providing a ceremonial setting suitable for the important task of handing back Hong Kong to China
