Fiona Stanley Hospital celebrates second construction anniversary
The recent topping out ceremony for Fiona Stanley, Western Australia's flagship public hospital designed by the Fiona Stanley Hospital Design Collaboration (comprising design firms HASSELL, Silver Thomas Hanley and Hames Sharley) represents a significant milestone for the $2 billion infrastructure project. It is the largest single building project undertaken by the state of Western Australia and the pouring of the last concrete by State Treasurer Christian Porter celebrates the project's second construction anniversary.
The project, which is both on time and on budget for a late 2013 practical completion, will be the major tertiary hospital in the south metropolitan area and will offer health care services to communities south of Perth and across the State. The hospital will offer leading clinical care, research and education and includes the new State rehabilitation service.
The design of the building draws on elements from the natural bushland setting, with the Banksia seed pods native to this site heavily influencing the formal geometry of the diamond patterning to the ward tower façade and its shading hoods.
The innovative design by the Fiona Stanley Hospital Design Collaboration uses the latest evidence-based design and scientific, technological and medical developments, reflecting the Government's determination to create a hospital environment to assist patients to recover while their surroundings operate in an ecologically sustainable way.
The Fiona Stanley Hospital project was named winner of the Government leading by example award in the 2010 Western Australian Environment Awards for its investment in on and off site environmental rehabilitation and commitment to sustainability in design.
